Poker Beat of the day

I was watching a No Limit Texas Hold’em poker game $25-$50 game the other day when the following sequence came up. Incidentally, I get more interested with sequences of bad beats than I do individual ones these days. The game was heads up and one player had $8400 and the other had around $1700.

I sort of got the feeling that the short stack was steaming having lost some money somewhere else and was now blowing what he had left in some crazy high octane heads up action. His amount in chips was something like $1743 and he actually bought in for this amount which is a little strange.

So I sat and watched this game as I was actually watching the player with the $8400 stack very closely anyway and had only logged on to specifically watch him. Several hands in and it was obvious that the short stack wasn’t here to play dead and was raising and re-raising very aggressively.

He had run his stack up slightly to about $1900 when the following hand came up. The short stack raised and was called by the big stack. The flop came J-7-2 rainbow and to cut a long story short, the short stack ending up launching a massive bluff attempt at exactly the wrong time.

The cards were revealed and the big stack had 7-7 for middle set and the short stack had A-3. His cards weren’t even suited and the board was rainbow so he was as good as dead. Two running aces couldn’t even save him as this would give a full-house to his opponent. The turn card was the 4d and now suddenly he had four outs to a wheel.

Amazingly the 5c came on the river to give a $3800 pot to our hero. Four hands later with our hero having slipped back to about $3400 after not surprisingly playing more carefully, the following hand came up. He raised pre-flop once again and was re-raised by the big stack……he raised again and was called.

The flop came Ad-Kc-3s and all of the money went in on the flop and when the cards were revealed, the big stack had A-K and the short stack had A-3…..turn card was an eight but the river card was another three to give our hero the pot……all $6800 of it which was more than $5000 more than what he started with.

Needless to say that the short stack (who now wasn’t a short stack) left his seat and didn’t return! My guess is that this guy was playing in some ring game like at $10-$20 or $25-$50 or maybe six handed and had done a bundle in.

He cannot possibly have been a low-stakes player unless he had totally taken leave of his senses. I often see this mental blow out and it is often accompanied by online casino players who buy in for odd amounts of money.

But it just highlights how severe the variance is in poker and if you are actually prone to reacting badly to negative incidents then poker can be one seriously tough game. In fact it is the ability to lose discipline in the blink of an eye that makes many people not suited to actually playing poker. This especially applies if the game in question is no-limit hold ‘em.

Usually tilt is induced by a serious of negative outdraws and not just one. If a player experiences an outdraw or a bad beat then he is somewhat annoyed. But with online poker the player will still be annoyed when the next negative event happens. This is simply because he hasn’t had time to mentally cool off. Then out of the blue, a succession of negative events sends him mentally over the edge.
